Large Rarely Occurring Fibromatous Epulis in a Snake Antivenom Producing Horse

اپوليس" يكي از نيوپلاسم‌هاي خوش خيم حفره دهاني مي باشد كه از رباط پيرامون دنداني و يا بافت پيوندي منشا گرفته و در سگ بسيار شايع و در گربه بندرت ديده مي‌شود. ولي ميزان بروز اين تومور در اسب بسيار نادر است . اندازه اين تومور مي‌تواند بقدري بزرگ باشد كه مانع از عمل جويدن مواد غذايي بشود. از نظر خصوصيات بافتي اپوليس در سگ به چندين فرم طبقه بندي مي‌شود. اپوليس فيبروماتوس (در ديد ميكروسكوپيك) با دارا بودن بافت زمينه‌اي سفت و پر عروقي كه در آن توده هاي سلول هاي فيبروبلاست ستاره‌اي شكل كه توسط مقاديرمتغيري از الياف فشرده كلاژن محاصره گريده‌اند، مشخص مي شود. گزارش حاضر مربوط به يك راس نريان 16 ساله مي‌باشد كه چندين سال براي توليد سرم ضد مارگزيدگي بكار گرفته مي‌شد. اين حيوان بعلت بروز علايم دشواري در جويدن و بلع مواد غذايي معاينه گرديد. بررسي دقيق دهان حيوان نشان داد كه يك توده بزرگ ( 15×12 سانتي متري) بر روي لثه در سمت راست فك پاييني وجود دارد. هيچ شانسي براي بهبودي حيوان متصور نبود. بنابراين حيوان به روش انساني كشته و سپس كالبد گشايي بر روي آن انجام گرديد. بر اساس محل بروز تومور وهمچنين مشخصات ماكروسكوپيك و ميكروسكوپيك، توده مشاهده شده تحت عنوان اپوليس فيبروماتوس شناسايي و تقسيم بندي گرديد.

occur commonly in dogs and rare in cats. However, it is very rare in horse. The tumor can be very large to interfere with normal mastication. Several forms of epulides can histologically be distinguished in dogs. Fibromatous epulis microscopically characterized by a dense well vascularized stroma populated by expansile mass of stellate fibroblasts surrounded by variable amounts of densely packed fibrillar collagen. The present report is related to a sixteen- years-old mixed breed stallion, had been used for several years in production of snake antivenom. The animal showed abnormality in mastication and difficulties in swallowing food. Therefore, clinical examination was performed. Close examination of the oral cavity revealed that there was a large proliferating mass (measured 15 × 12 cm in diameter) on the gingival of the right mandible. There was no good prognosis, therefore, the animal was euthanized and, subsequently, necropsied. Based on location of the lesion as well as gross and microscopic features, the protruded mass was diagnosed and classified as fibromatous epulis.
