Abstract :
Chromium cast irons are a class of wearable materials. They are very suitable for many applications such as mineral processing, cement production, coke industry and other. Their microstructures constituted by M7C3 eutectiques carbides and austenitic or martensitic matrix are at the origin of these properties. The matrix, after heat treatment, is the seat of a secondary precipitations which strengthen its properties and allow the cast iron for more hard wear conditions. The scope of this work is to study the effect of the manganese and molybdenum on the wear behavior of a 15% chromium cast iron. The manganese and the molybdenum are varied in the range of 0.5 and 3 % and combined at 0.5 % each one. Optical microscopy, SEM, DRX abrasion and friction tests was carried out in ortder to study the effect of the carbide forming elements (molybdenum and manganese) on the wear behavior of the studied high chromium cast iron. The obtained results show that the composition of the cast iron is slightly hypoeutectic and itʹs matrix is martensitic. The DRX analysis based on the Rietveld method revealed the various microstructural phases which compose the studied cast iron microstructure. The best friction and abrasion resistances are obtained by samples containing 3 % of molybdenum. Other important results was obtained by yhe samples containing 0.5%(Mn+Mo).
