Abstract :
This study investigates the protective effect of zinc supplementation on the kidney of gasoline poisoned rats. The rats were divided into seven groups with five rats per group. Prior to gasoline poisoning in the treated group, the rats were administered with 0.02mg of zinc. Histopathological study, LD50 determination of treated and untreated rats, malonildiahydehide and rate of inhibition of lipid peroxidation were among investigations carried out. The histology showed a moderate preservation of the cytoarchitecture of the kidney at a lower dose of the gasoline used in the poisoning. The LD50 of the treated group was singnificnatly higher and malonildehydehyde concentration was singnificantly reduced (p < 0.05). There was an improvement in the rate of inhibition of peroxidation in the zinc treated rats. The results suggest that zinc supplement has some protection on the kidney of gasoline poisoned rats.
