Abstract :
In the African traditional medicine, Bridelia ferruginea Benth is used for the treatment of hypertension and as diuretic. Since, the diuretic activity of this substance has not been investigated scientifically. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the diuretic potential of aqueous extract of this plant in normal rats. The experiments were carried out under the same conditions with synthetic pharmacological diuretics (furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, and spironolactone). A single dose of each substance was used. The aqueous extract of Bridelia ferruginea, 24 hours after its administration intraperitoneally in the rat, provokes a significant elimination (p?0.01) of the water overload. This extract causes the increase in natriuresis and in kaliuresis respectively of 55.71% (p?0.01) and of 49.80 (p?0.01). It increases significantly (p?0.01) plasma sodium level (natremy). The Na+/K+ urinary ratio indicates that the aqueous extract of Bridelia ferruginea induces the natriuresis. These studies show that this extract has diuretic and natriuretic effects that tend toward those of furosemide. These results seem to justify its use in traditional medicine to treat hypertension and as diuretic.
