Abstract :
Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of the unstable angina pectoris (UAP). The present study has been designed to assess the redox state of patients with UAP and to compare it with that of normal healthy subjects, by determining the total antioxidant activity (AOA) of the serum and saliva and correlating it with the disease status. Study group comprised of 34 patients of confirmed diagnosis of UAP and another control group composed of 34, age and sex matched healthy volunteers. The study was conducted in GSVM medical college, Kanpur. Total AOA was assayed spectrophotometrically. Patients of UAP exhibited significantly decreased (p < 0.0001) serum and salivary total AOA as compared to controls. Decreased contents of total AOA in serum and saliva was positively correlated with the severity of disease process. Total AOA in serum was significantly (p < 0.0001) higher than salivary AOA of the patients at all the levels of disease process. Total AOA in serum was significantly higher p < 0.0001) than that in saliva of the control subjects. Though reduction at time of presentation and recovery after treatment in AOA occurred in both serum and saliva of the patients, the magnitude of depression and improvement was always higher in saliva. Salivary total AOA can be taken as a potential biomarker for oxidative stress in UAP patients and can be an independent predictor of cardiovascular events during follow-up.
