Carter subgroups in finite groups

Let be the class of finite groups which contain nonconjugate Carter subgroups and assume that is nonempty. Then it has been shown that a member of , of minimal order, should be an almost simple group A. In this paper, using CFSG, we restrict the possibilities for such A: in particular we show that A cannot be simple, except possibly when it is a unitary group.
