Yield and cane maturation of 14-year-old Calamus subinermis planted under logged-over secondary forest in Lungmanis Forest Reserve, Sandakan

Field observations based on the physical characteristics of the 14-year-old rattan Calamus subinermis planted under secondary logged-over forest in Kolapis A, Lungmanis Forest Reserve, indicate that more than 81% of the harvested canes were mature and 77% were regarded usable. The net yield was estimated to be 7,010 sticks per ha. The yield of rattan canes could be estimated by physical appearance where the mature cane is without leaf sheath or covered with dried sheath. The mature canes of C. subinermis planted under secondary logged-over forest in Kolapis A had moisture content below 165% and basic density above 0.40 g/cm3 .
