Abstract
Demographic changes, federal law, state and local regulations, and the potential for legal liability are important reasons for nurses and other health care providers to incorporate appropriate strategies for communicating with limited English proficient patients. Strategies commonly employed for addressing language barriers in health care settings are presented. The advantages, disadvantages, and implications of these approaches for nursing practice are discussed.
