Is there a regulatory role for mechanism-based bioassays?

This paper discusses potential applications of assays whose endpoints include the contributions of all dioxin-like compounds. An Ah receptor assay developed in our laboratory is recommended because it is based on the mechanism of toxic action of TCDD, and shows no evidence that one dioxin-like congener can mask the presence of another.
