Abstract :
Elevated levels of UV-B are known to inhibit plant growth, development and physiological processes, although sensitivity to UV-B varies within plant species. Conifers and many evergreens are long-lived with long generation times, and damage by UV-B is likely to accumulate over the years. Three pilot experiments in closed chambers and greenhouses have revealed variable responses in subarctic forest plants and trees to enhanced UV-B radiation. These responses have been identified as changes in morphology and growth. Our current project seeks to identify and quantify the effects of UV-B radiation on the growth and development of Scots pine needles under field conditions.
