Abstract
Biological degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) by Pseudomonas putida CP1 was investigated in batch shake flask-cultures. Experiments were carried out at initial DCP concentrations between 50 and and the rate and extent of DCP degradation were quantified. With increasing initial DCP concentrations in shake-flask cultures, percentage removal of DCP decreased and residual DCP concentrations increased proportionally. The rate of DCP degradation increased with increasing initial DCP concentration up to . Further increases in DCP concentration caused decreases in the rate of degradation because of substrate inhibition. A kinetic model based on substrate inhibition was proposed. Rate and inhibition constants were determined using the experimental data.
