Abstract :
A new unipolar diffusion charger was developed and its perfonnance investigated. Transpiring air
is used to minimize the electrostatic particle losses. Applying a high electric field will produce a
sufficiently high ion concentration in the charger to charge all particles. The electric field will
deflect and consequently precipitate many of the charged particles. Transpiration flow allows
experimental conditions where submicron or ultrafine particles can be efficiently charged without
substantial losses in the charging section. The mean ~harge distributions of the particles leaving
the charging section were measured as a function of particle size.
