Sustainable development, global restructuring and immigrant housing

Sustainable development is frequently oriented towards aspects of environmental quality and carrying capacity.1 A broader view, endorsed by the UN Centre for Human Settlements, includes aspects of social and economic equity as well. In this connection, global restructuring presents a significant context. Its associated processes, including international migration, help create and reinforce patterns of socioeconomic polarisation and spatial segregation. These patterns find expression particularly in urban housing. This paper examines various aspects of the housing situation of immigrants in the USA.
