Essential spectra of coupled systems of differential equations and applications in hydrodynamics

An operator theoretic framework is developed to determine the essential spectra of diagonal dominant coupled systems of differential equations. Applications are given to the Ekman boundary layer problem and to the Hagen–Poiseuille flow problem with non-axisymmetric disturbances.
