Abstract
Deposition velocities of soluble and/or reactive gases across an air-water interface are determined using a single-level profile method developed by Lo (1993, J. appl. Met. 32, 1893–1900). This single-level profile method employs one level of atmospheric data on wind and temperature, coupled with water surface temperature. The present study is an improvement over earlier work by Hicks and Liss (1976, Tellus XXIII, 348–352). The main feature of the present method is that the atmospheric stability parameter z/L and the friction velocity u* are part of the solution determined simultaneously with the deposition velocities. In Hicks and Lissʹs earlier study, both z/L and u* are considered known, and their calculations were carried out using a series of assumed values of u* and z/L. Theoretical results of the present study yield good agreement with those of Hicks and Liss. The methodology presented in this study is most useful for determining flux parameters and transfer coefficients from buoy measurements over a water body.
