Abstract :
The Henryʹs law constants (H) of the fluorinated alcohols CF3CH2OH, CHF2CF2CH2OH, and CF3CF2CH2OH were measured in water by using the equilibrium headspace technique. The H values of the alcohols between 275 and 299 K were 44.6–255, 129–991, and 14.0–49.1 Matm−1, respectively. The variation of H with temperature was determined from the solvation entropy and enthalpy. CF3CH2OH and CF3CF2CH2OH were less soluble than CH3CH2OH and CH3CH2CH2OH, but CHF2CF2CH2OH was more soluble than n-CH3CH2CH2OH. The wet-deposition lifetimes of CF3CH2OH, CHF2CF2CH2OH, and CF3CF2CH2OH in the atmosphere were estimated to be 0.94, 0.29, and 5.0 years from the Henryʹs law constants. These results show that uptake by cloudwater and rain will be a significant sink for these chemicals in the atmosphere.
