Abstract
Results of the research on the biochemical mechanisms of intracellular pH regulation under the conditions of biological excess phosphorus removal (BEPR) activated sludge systems are critically evaluated and discussed. BEPR models postulate that anaerobic sequestration of short-chain volatile fatty acids (SCVFA compounds) is the driving force of anaerobic phosphorus release. Uptake of SCVFA compounds induces an intracellular acidification process which described quantitatively in the paper.
