PPARγ and inflammatory bowel disease: a new therapeutic target for ulcerative colitis and Crohnʹs disease

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) is a nuclear receptor that is known to play a central role in adipocyte differentiation and insulin sensitivity. Through work in several animal models of intestinal inflammation, it is now recognized that PPARγ also inhibits tissue injury associated with immune activation. These studies point to PPARγ as a novel anti-inflammatory mediator with broad therapeutic potential.
