Abstract :
In 2001, Hartford Hospital spent $5.2 million on agency staffing, representing more than 9% of its total budgeted nursing salary dollars for the period. Our reliance on agency staff was a significant financial burden. In addition, quality of care issues arose related to inconsistent caregivers and value differences between the organization and the nonhospital staff.
