Decomposition of matrices into commutators of involutions Original Research Article

We consider the group SLnF of all n×n matrices with determinant 1 over a field F. We prove that, if F is the complex number field or the real number field, every matrix A in SLnF is a product of at most two commutators of involutions. Moreover, two is the smallest such number.
