Approximation theory and matrix completions

A new point of view is introduced in the study of completion problems for partially defined matrices, by relating it to approximation theory in the Banach space of matrices endowed with the operator norm. The approach is interesting especially for completion patterns for which precise results are not possible; several results are obtained in this direction.
