Abstract :
International developments under the Convention on Biological Diversity and General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade have opened a plethora of issues, for protection of both biodiversity and intellectual property. India has its strengths and weaknesses in both these sectors. Obviously, there-is a vast gap between realisation of the issues and right steps in the desired direction. There are even difficulties in understanding the basic issues which is critical for concrete action and some level of assured success for the country. A brief comparison of the two Conventions is the forerunner. It follows with views on the course of action for a country like India, whether as a nation or as a member of the international community. Both top-down and bottom-up approaches of initiatives are considered essential for the country. This general perspective on the subject is attempted to make the readers understand some of the intricacies for confronting various issues.
