Investigation of the hydrolysis of (3-triethoxysilylpropyl)succinic acid anhydride by means of FT-IR

The kinetic data (rate constant, Arrhenius activation energy, frequency factor) of the hydrolysis reaction of the anhydride moiety of (3-triethoxysilylpropyl)succinic acid anhydride (TESP-SA) were investigated by means of FT-IR monitoring the decrease of the carbonyl stretching band at 1778 cm-1. The reaction had been conducted in an excess of water under acidic conditions (pseudo-first order reaction). In addition, the application of TESP-SA to cotton fabrics in conjunction with sodium hypophosphite as curing catalyst at elevated temperature (180 C, 90 s) was tested.
