Using the scaling behaviour of higher taxa for the assessment of species richness

In this paper, we show that fine-scale data on seed plant diversity exhibit exponential scaling behaviour across the taxonomic hierarchy. One practical implication of this result is that the scaling behaviour of higher taxonomic levels can be used to predict species richness in a given area with reasonable accuracy.
