Abstract :
The novel ternary zinc(II) coordination compound of formula [Zn(2,20-bipy)(Phmal)(H2O)]$2H2O (PhmalZphenylmalonate, 2,20-bipyZ
2,20-bipyridine) has been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), UV–Vis spectra. X-ray
crystallographic studies of the complex reveal that the zinc atom has a distorted square–pyramidal geometry being coordinated by two
nitrogen atoms of 2,20-bipy, two oxygen atoms from the phenylmalonate ligand and one water. It is very interesting in this structure that the
complex involves a metal ion bridged ligand–ligand aromatic ring intramolecular p–p stacking interaction. An extended two-dimensional
supramolecular network exhibiting the (6, 3) pattern was assembled through hydrogen bonding.
