Abstract :
There hasbeenasubstantialincreaseintheaveragedurationofunemploymentrelative
to theunemploymentrateintheU.S.overthelast30years.Weevaluatethe
performanceofastandardjob-searchmodelinexplainingthisphenomenon.In
particular,weexaminewhethertheincreaseinwithin-groupwageinequalityandthe
declineintheincidenceofunemploymentcanaccountfortheincreaseinunemploy-
mentduration.Theresultsindicatethatthesetwochangescanexplainasignificantpart
of theincreaseoverthelast30years,althoughthemodelfailstomatchthebehaviorof
unemploymentdurationduring1980s
