A note on the rule classification for square homogeneous cellular automata

We give the dynamical sense for the qualitative ideas of Wolframʹs and Staufferʹs classifications for the elementary two-dimensional cellular automata with four nearest neighbours. The new sense arises from the attracting role of the so-called subshifts.
