Abstract
Recently an isothermal diffusion-controlled non-linear growth model was developed to explain complex zoning patterns observed in natural plagioclase crystals, a major constituent of many volcanic rocks. The analysis showed periodic patterns emerging from a Hopf bifurcation, as well as period-doubling sequence to chaos. Here, we generalize the model to include two types of thermal effects: consideration of heat transport and latent heat of crystallization, and cooling history. It is seen that these effects are small except in rapidly quenched rocks.
