Abstract
The research reactors FRG-1 and FRG-2 of Forschungszentrum Geesthacht GmbH are of the pool type. They have thermal ratings of 5 MW and 15 MW respectively and first reached criticality m 1958 (FRG-1) and 1963 (FRG-2). They are used mainly for materials research, isotope production and neutron activation analysis. Both research reactors are installed in a single reactor hall. This means that they use a considerable number of auxiliary facilities jointly. As GKSS intends to operate FRG-1, in particular, for many years to come in order to carry out necessary research work, this reactor has had experimental equipment added (e.g. a cold neutron source (see W. Krull et al., Atomwirtsch. Atomtech. 38 (1) (1993) 48–53)). Both reactors have been refitted at regular intervals in accordance with safety standards (see W. Hajek et al., Nucl. Eng. Int. December (1988) 5869) so that they can be operated safely and reliably in the coming years.
