Abstract :
A reformulated four-node shell element is used to systematically analyze shell structures. The formulation proposed allows a synthetic structured analysis of the various modes of deformation developed by a shell structure. Flexural and extensional stress components may be decomposed in accordance to the flexural and membrane behaviour of the corresponding finite shell element model. The load-carrying mechanisms developed by the shell structure may also be isolated and their actions be integrated and related to the overall structural behaviour of the shell. The potential activation of the moment redistribution mechanism, triggered by the in-plane twisting and membrane flexural stiffness of the shell model, is shown to play a significant role in the development of the load-carrying mechanisms which dominate the flexural behaviour of the shell structure.
