Abstract
The enriched displacement procedure described in [1] is used in order to capture the detailed structure of the strain field within shear bands during strain-localization. A method to select elements to be enriched which combines three well-known localization characteristics is proposed. A parameter analysis is performed to define appropriate values for the enrichment delimiters. Once the elements to be enriched have been selected, an automated procedure is used to identify the locations and orientations of the shear bands in the mesh. The procedure uses elementary cluster detection and line-fitting techniques and can identify up to two simultaneously forming shear bands. A method to place the enriched patch inside elements through which the shear bands pass is developed. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the approach.
