A method for contact problems using virtual elements Original Research Article

A direct optimization method for contact problems is shown that uses separate corrective force vectors for equilibrium and compatability. The geometric mediation across the contact region is accomplished by defining virtual nodes and elements. Integrations required on each contact surface are carried on a virtual mesh that reflects the mesh of the body for which forces are required. Examples demonstrate that the method is accurate and robust.
