Abstract
In computer-aided design a developing design tool is the PDE method, where surfaces are generated by solving a partial differential equation with appropriate boundary conditions. Methods for generating B-spline approximations to PDE surfaces (to enable data transfer to other CAD systems) have been considered, and the fairness properties of the resulting B-spline surfaces examined. For some applications the accuracy of the approximations will be important. This paper examines the effect on the accuracy of different finite element mesh sizes and degrees of B-spline surface, concluding with recommendations about how to change these parameters in order to achieve the required accuracy.
