Abstract :
Dynamicloadingtoferromagneticmaterialsandlargescaledyieldingresultinpeakorvalleyandnon-linearcurve,respectively,ontheDirectCurrentPotentialDrop(DCPD)versusCrackOpeningDisplacement(COD)plots,whichmakeitdifficulttodeterminethecrackinitiationpoint.Inthisworkhighintensityofcurrentupto100AwasappliedtothespecimensofSA106Gr.Cferriticsteelandthecrackgrowthbehaviorwasdirectlymonitoredbyahighspeedcameratoobtainthecrackinitiationpoint.Theeffectsofloadingrateupto1200mmmin−1uponthefractureresistancewereexplored.Astheresults,ithasbeenshownthat,althoughnosubstantialdifferencewasseenintheload–CODplots,thecrackinitiationandthenJiandJ–Rcurvewerequitesensitivetotheloadingrate.Thatis,undertheloadingrateof300mmmin−1thematerialshowedtheworstfractureresistancethanunderstaticloadingandevenunderthehigherloadingratesof600and1200mmmin−1.AlsoapplyingthehighspeedcameraandhighcurrentsourcehavebeenprovedtobeaneffectivewaytofindouttheaccuratecrackinitiationpointandtocompensatethepulseofDCPDduetotheferromagneticeffect.
