Abstract :
Theobjectiveofthehighperformancelightwaterreactor(HPLWR)projectistoassessthemeritandeconomicfeasibilityofahighefficiencyLWRoperatingatthermodynamicallysupercriticalregime.Anefficiencyofapproximately44%isexpected.Toaccomplishthisobjective,ahighlyqualifiedteamofEuropeanresearchinstitutesandindustrialpartnerstogetherwiththeUniversityofTokyoisassessingthemajorissuespertainingtoanewreactorconcept,undertheco-sponsorshipoftheEuropeanCommission.TheassessmenthasemphasizedtherecentadvancementachievedinthisareabyJapan.Additionally,itaccountsforadvancedEuropeanreactordesignrequirements,recentimprovements,practicaldesignaspects,availabilityofplantcomponentsandtheavailabilityofhightemperaturematerials.ThefinalobjectiveofthisprojectistoreachaconclusiononthepotentialoftheHPLWRtohelpsustainthenuclearoption,bysupplyingcompetitivelypricedelectricity,aswellastocontinuethenuclearcompetenceinLWRtechnology.Thefollowingisabriefsummaryofthemainprojectachievements:
