Abstract :
The“zero”powerASTRAcriticalfacilityattheKurchatovInstituteisintendedforexperimentalinvestigationofneutronicsofHTGRreactors.Sphericalgraphiteelementswithmultilayercoatedfuelparticlesinside,alongwithpuregraphiteandabsorbercontainingsphericalelementscanbeusedindifferentconfigurationsofcores.Reactor-gradegraphiteblocksareusedinthestructuresofbottom,side,top,and/orinternalreflectors.Hardwarecapabilitiesofthefacilityallowcreationofthecriticalassemblieswiththeouterdiameterandheightofthesidereflectorofupto3.8and4.6m,respectively.TheASTRAcriticalfacilitywasusedtosimulatetheHTGRreactorsearlierdesignedinRussia,PBMRreactor(beingdevelopedinRSA)andisgoingtobeusedundertheinternationalGT-MHRproject(France,Japan,Russia,USA)mainlyforthepurposeofobtainingexperimentalbenchmarkdataforcomputercodevalidations.BriefdescriptionoftheASTRAfacilitycharacteristics,investigatedcoreconfigurations,experimentalmethods,andresultsisgiveninthepaper.
