Abstract :
InJapanAtomicEnergyResearchInstitute(JAERI),successfuldevelopmentandoperationsoftheHighTemperatureEngineeringTestReactor(HTTR)arecoordinatedbyprogramstostudyappliedsystemsofthepromisingreactortechnology.Onesuchprogrambeingcarriedoutfrom2001to2007isthedesignanddevelopmentfortheGasTurbineHighTemperatureReactorof300MWenominalcapacity(GTHTR300),aimingatdemonstrationofaprototypeplantin2010sinJapan.GTHTR300featuresanoriginaldesignoffuelcyclebasedonimprovedHTTRfuelelementandofgreatlysimplifiedplantsysteminpursuitofeconomicalperformancewithminimaldevelopmentrequirements.Thefuelcyclecharacterizesonhighburnup,lowpowerpeakingfactor,andextendedrefuelinginterval.Theplantsystemincorporatessalientdesignsimplificationincludingconventionalsteelreactorpressurevessel,non-intercooledpowerconversioncycle,horizontalsingle-shaftturbomachine,anddistributedmodularmaintenanceoftheoverallplant.Plannedresearchanddevelopmentsupportingdetaileddesigneffortsincludeperformancetestsofsubscalecomponentsandcontrolsystem.ThispaperdescribestheGTHTR300referencedesignandrelatedR&DactivitiesinJAERI.
