Abstract
the1960s,atheoreticalrelationshipbetweenthedimensionalchangesandthecoefficientofthermalexpansionofirradiatedgraphitewasderivedbyJ.H.W.Simmons.Thetheorywasshowntobecomparablewithexperimentalobservationsatlowirradiationdoses,butshowntodivergeathigherirradiationdoses.However,variousmodifiedversionsofthistheoryhavebeenusedasthefoundationofdesignandlifepredictioncalculationsforgraphite-moderatedreactors.
Thispaperre-examinestheSimmonsrelationship,summarisingitsderivationandassumptions.Therelationshipwasthenmodifiedtoincorporatethehighdose,highstrainchangesthatwereassumedtoberepresentedinthechangesinYoung’smoduluswithirradiationdose.Byscrutinisingthebehaviouroffiniteelementanalyses,itwaspossibletouseamodifiedSimmonsrelationshiptopredictthedimensionalchangesofanisotropicandanisotropicgraphitetohighirradiationdoses.
Theseissuesareimportanttopresenthigh-temperaturereactors(HTRs)asthelifeofHTRgraphitecomponentsisdependentupontheirdimensionalchangebehaviour.Agreaterunderstandingofthisbehaviourwillhelpintheselectionanddevelopmentofgraphitematerials.
