Abstract :
Tomaintainthermalcontactbetweenthefuelassemblyandthegraphitemoderator,RBMKdesignreactorsemploygraphitesplitrings,whicharealternativelytightonthepressuretubeortightonthegraphitebrickcentralbore.Thesplitinthegraphiteringsallowsahelium/nitrogengasmixturetoflowupthefuelchannel.Thispreventsoxidationofthegraphiteandcanbesampledtodetectpressuretubeleaks.Theinitialclearancebetweentheringsandpressuretubeorgraphitebrickisapproximately2.7mm(1.35mmeachside).Duetomaterialpropertychangesofthepressuretubesandgraphiteduringoperationofthereactor,thesizeoftheclearancebetweentheringsandthepressuretube/brick,calledthe“gas-gap”,varies.ClosureofthesegapshasbeenidentifiedasapossiblesafetycaseissuebyreactordesignersandbyindependentreviewscarriedoutaspartofTACISreviewsandaspartoftheIgnalinaSafetyAnalysisReport.Thereasonsforthisarethatgas-gapclosurewouldcausethepressuretubetobetightlygrippedbythegraphitebricksviathesplitrings,whichcouldleadto:
