Abstract :
Applicabilityofquenchingmeshesforthecontrolofhydrogencombustioninnuclearpowerplantsundersevereaccidenthasbeeninvestigatedexperimentally.Theeffectsofinitialpressureinhydrogen/airmixturesonquenchingdistanceshavebeenfirstmeasuredtoprovidebasicdata.Ithasbeenfoundthatthequenchingdistancehasitsminimumnearstoichiometryandcanbeapproximatedtobeinverselyproportionaltoinitialpressure.Small-scaleexperimentswereconductedtoidentifytheapplicabilityofquenchingmeshesforthecontrolofhydrogencombustioninaclosedsystemwherehydrogencombustionleadstopressurerise.Simplifiedphenomenologicalanalysishasalsobeenperformedtoidentifyparametersthatgoverntheperformanceofquenchingmeshes.Ithasbeenexperimentallysubstantiatedthatquenchingmeshescouldeffectivelyconfinehydrogencombustioninacompartmentwhenhotgaseousjetejectioncanbemitigated.
