Abstract :
JapanAtomicEnergyResearchInstitute(JAERI)hasbeencarryingoutadesignanddevelopmentalprogramforthegasturbinehightemperaturereactorof300MWenominal-capacity(GTHTR300)powerplant,aimingatprototypedemonstrationinJapanduring2010s.Thispaperintroducesoverallobjectivesoftheprogramanddescribestheplantdesignanddevelopmentapproachtakentoachievethesegoals.Adetaileddescriptionisfocusedonthepowerconversionsystemdesignandassociatedcomponentresearchanddevelopmentundertakeninthepresentprogram.Thepowerconversionsystemincorporatesuniquedesignapproachofnon-intercooledcycletoattaineconomicalperformanceatminimalsystemcomplexity,intrinsiccycleflowprovisionforreactorpressurevesselcooling,simplifiedandhigh-performanceturbomachineinahorizontaldesign,andmodularityofmaintenanceforallmajorpowerconversionequipment.Thispaperreportsextensivetechnicalevaluationrelatedtothesesignificantsystemdesignfeatures,whichareshowntooffertheoptimumsolutionofplantcost,efficiencypotential,reliabilityandmaintainabilityinadditiontonear-termcommercialdeployment.
