Abstract :
Thepresentpaperdescribesanexperimentalandanalyticalstudyofthemagnetohydrodynamicinstabilityarisinginanannularlinearinductionpump.Intheexperiment,theinstabilitywasinvestigatedindetailusinganelectromagneticpumpofflowrate7m3/min.TheexperimentalresultsshowthattheinstabilityoccurswhenthemagneticReynoldsnumberislargerthanunityandtheinstabilitybecomesmoreintensiveastheslipincreases.Theinstabilityischaracterizedbylowfrequencypressurepulsation,non-uniformmagneticfieldalongtheazimuth,wide-frequencyvibrationofthepumpandpipe,fluctuationofwindingvoltageandcurrent.ThenumericalanalysisrevealsthatwhenthemagneticReynoldsnumberislargerthanunity,anazimuthalnon-uniformityoftheappliedmagneticfieldorofthesodiuminletvelocitybringsaboutsodiumvorticesandhencealowfrequencypressurepulsationoccurs.Inaddition,thenon-uniformitycausesadecreaseofthedevelopedpressureandsometimesadipontheP–Qcurve.
