Abstract :
InIndiantypepressurizedheavywaterreactors(PHWRs),twofuellingmachines(F/Ms)arelocatedoneithersideofthereactor.Thebehaviorofthecoolantchannelandtierodwhenfuellingmachinesareengagedonboththeendsofthechannelforrefuelingunderearthquakeisstudied.Itisobservedthattheloadsactingonthecoolanttubewerehigh.Inordertoreducetheearthquakeloadactingoncoolantchannelthefuellingmachinesarerestrainedbyenergyabsorberscalledleadextrusiondampers(LED).ThedesignofanLEDisperformedbasedontheextrusionprinciple.Theaimofthepaperistostudytheeffectivenessofsuchadeviceinreducingtheresponse.ItwasobservedthatthestressesinthecoolantchannelduetoearthquakearereducedsignificantlywhenLEDsareused.ResponsespectrumanalysisisalsocarriedoutforthesystemwithLED.InthisanalysistheLEDisreplacedwithanequivalentviscousdamperandstiffnessobtainedusingCaughy’slinearisationtechniques.Responsespectrumanalysisresultsandthenonlineartimehistoryanalysisresultsshowgoodagreement.
