Abstract :
Oneofthecoolingconceptsofthehigh-temperaturecoriummeltwhichmayforminacoremeltdownaccidentreliesonsufficientlyhomogeneousspreading.Theconditionsunderwhichcompletespreadingcanbeexpectedaretheobjectsofcurrenttheoreticalandexperimentalstudies.
ThelubricationapproximationforlowReynoldsnumberflowsleadstoanequationforwhichself-similarsolutionsforvariousconditionshavebeenfoundbymanyauthors.Thispaperoffersself-similarsolutionsforthespreadingofavolumeofliquidwhichincreasesasapowerlawoftime.Theeffectofcoolingontheviscosityisrepresentedbythetime-dependentviscosity.Avarietyofspreadingexperimentshavebeenperformedwithinmanyinternationalprograms.Theinitialconditionsandboundaryconditionsusedaremorecomplexthanthoseforwhichself-similarsolutionsareknownexplicitly.Basedontheasymptoticbehavior,ast→∞,ofsolutionsoftheCauchyproblemforaquitegeneralclassofinitialdata,approximatesolutionsaregivendescribingthespreadingoffinitevolumewithatimedependentfluxrelease,andsomeofthehigh-temperatureexperimentsareanalyzed.Theeffectofbubblesonrheologyinspreadingexperimentswithwaterandshear-thinningfluidsisinvestigated.
