Abstract
SalientfeaturesoftheInternationalReactorInnovativeandSecure(IRIS)arepresentedhere.IRIS,anintegral,modular,mediumsize(335MWe)PWR,hasbeenunderdevelopmentsincetheturnofthecenturybyaninternationalconsortiumledbyWestinghouseandincludingover20organizationsfromninecountries.Describedherearethefeaturesoftheintegraldesignwhichincludessteamgenerators,pumpsandpressurizerinsidethevessel,togetherwiththecore,controlrods,andneutronreflector/shield.AbriefsummaryisprovidedoftheIRISapproachtoextendedmaintenanceovera48-monthschedule.TheuniqueIRISsafety-by-designapproachisdiscussed,which,byeliminatingaccidents,atthedesignstage,ordecreasingtheirconsequences/probabilitieswhenoutrighteliminationisnotpossible,providesaverypowerfulfirstlevelofdefenseindepth.Thesafety-by-designallowsasignificantreductionandsimplificationofthepassivesafetysystems,whicharepresentedhere,togetherwithanassessmentoftheIRISresponsetotransientsandpostulatedaccidents.
