Abstract :
JapanAtomicEnergyResearchInstitutecarriesoutresearchanddevelopmentonaccelerator-drivensystem(ADS)totransmuteminoractinidesandlong-livedfissionproductsinhigh-levelradioactivewaste.Thesystemiscomposedofhighintensityprotonaccelerator,lead-bismuthspallationtargetandlead-bismuthcooledsubcriticalcorewithnitridefuel.About2500kgofminoractinideisloadedintothesubcriticalcore.Annualtransmutationamountusingthissystemis250kgwith800MWofthermaloutput.Thistransmutationamountcorrespondstotheamountofminoractinidesproducedfrom10unitsof1GWepowerreactorsannually.Asuperconductinglinearacceleratorwiththebeampowerof20–30MWisconnectedtodrivethesubcriticalcore.Tomaximizethetransmutationefficiency,thenitridefuelwithouturanium,suchas(Np,Am,Pu)N,isselected.ThenitridefuelirradiatedintheADSisreprocessedbypyrochemicalprocessfollowedbythere-fabricationofnitridefuel.Manyresearchanddevelopmentactivitiesareunderwayandplannedinthefieldsofsubcriticalcoredesign,spallationtargettechnology,lead-bismuthhandlingtechnology,acceleratordevelopment,andminoractinidefueldevelopment.Especially,tostudyandevaluatethefeasibilityoftheADSfromphysicsandengineeringaspects,thetransmutationexperimentalfacility(TEF)isproposedunderaframeworkoftheHigh-IntensityProtonAcceleratorProject.
