Abstract :
Anenhancedin-vesselcorecatcherisbeingdesignedandevaluatedaspartofajointUnitedStates(US)–KoreanInternationalNuclearEnergyResearchInitiative(INERI)investigatingmethodstoinsureretentionofmaterialsthatmayrelocatetothelowerheadofareactorvesselundersevereaccidentconditionsinadvancedreactors.Thisenhancedcorecatcherdesignconsistsofseveralinterlockingsectionsthataremachinedtofittogetherwheninsertedintothelowerhead.Eachsectionofthecorecatcherconsistsoftwomateriallayerswithanoptiontoaddathirdlayer(ifdeemednecessary):abasematerial,whichhasthecapabilitytosupportandcontainthemassofcorematerialsthatmayrelocateduringasevereaccident;aninsulatorcoatingmaterialontopofthebasematerial,whichresistsinteractionswithhigh-temperaturecorematerials;andanoptionalcoatingonthebottomsideofthebasematerialtopreventanypotentialoxidationofthebasematerialduringthelifetimeofthereactor.Thispapersummarizesresultsfromthermal,flow,andstructuralanalysesaswellasinitialscopingmaterialsinteractionteststhatwerecompletedtosupporttheconceptualdesignofthecorecatcher.
