Abstract :
Co-basedhardfacingalloysexposedtoPWRprimarycoolantmaybereplacedwithCo-freealloystoloweroccupationalradiationexposure.ToevaluatetheviabilityofCo-freehardfacingalloys,weconductedhot-watertestsforgatevalveshardfacedwithNOREM™02(Fe-base),Deloro™50(Ni-base),andStellite™6(Co-base).Usingahighflowtestloop,on–offcyclingtestswereconductedin280°Cwater.ItwasobservedthatNOREM02exhibitedgallingandexcessiveleakafter1000cycletestwhereasnoleakagewasdevelopedwithDeloro50after2000cycles.ToestimatetheactivityreductioneffectofCo-freehardfacingalloys,anexistingactivitytransportmodelwasmodified.ItisfoundthatthemaincontributorofCoactivitybuildupisthecorrosionofsteamgenerator(SG)tubing.TheKoreanNextGenerationReactor(APR-1400)tubedwithalloy690havingareducedcobaltimpurityallowanceisexpectedtohave73%lowerCoactivityonSGsurfacecomparedwiththecaseofalloy600tubing.ThecompletereplacementofStellite6withCo-freehardfacingalloysisexpectedtocutadditional5%ofactivitywhichmaybetoosmalltojustifytheriskofgallingandleakagedevelopmentasrevealedbythehot-watertest.
