Abstract :
Modelingandanalysisofthree-dimensionalthermo-mechanicalandmulti-bodycontactproblemsinaCANDU®nuclearfuelelementarepresentedinthispaper.Eachaxisymmetriccomponentinafuelelementisfirstmodeledusingthethree-dimensionalnine-nodeharmonicfiniteelements.Allinteriordegreesoffreedom(DOF’s)inthecomponentequationsofequilibriumaresubsequentlyeliminatedthroughsub-structuringtoformulatesystemequationsintermsofsmallsetofcontactvariables.Thelargescalemulti-bodycontactprobleminaCANDU6fuelelementisthensolvedusingthecombinationsoffiniteelementmethod(FEM),linearcomplementaryequationmethod(LCEM)andLemke’salgorithms.TheentireprocedureisimplementedintotheFUEL3Dcode.NumericalresultsarecomparedwithanalyticalandANSYSsolutionsforseveraltestcases.
