Abstract :
Therotationalcomponentofseismicstrong-motionisattractingattentionsinceitisbecomingevidentthatitmaycontributeconsiderablytotheoverallresponseofstructurestoearthquakemotions.Thispaperpresentsanimprovedmethodforcalculatingthetimehistoriesoftorsionalandrockingcomponentsofgroundmotioncorrespondingtoasetofthreerecordedorthogonaltranslationalcomponents.Themathematicalmodelisbasedonadetailedrepresentationofsoilimpedanceandcontributionsofbodywaves.Thedependenceoftheangleofwaveincidenceonthefrequencyofwaveisproperlygiveninthecalculationofrotationalcomponentswithconsiderationofcriticalincidentangles.Numericalresultsofthetorsionandrockingobtainedfromasetofthreerecordedtranslationalcomponentsarealsopresented.
